Air transport growing in 2022
Passenger traffic +122% compared to the previous year, but far from 2019 performance
The federal statistical office of Switzerland has recently communicated the data relating to the volumes of air traffic recorded during the year 2022. Passengers in transit at the country's airports were 43.6 million, almost 24 million more than to the previous year. A performance that marks +122% in 12 months, but which nevertheless remains far from the volumes recorded in the period preceding the pandemic.
The recovery also affected the cargo sector: the tons transported by aircraft increased by +7% on an annual basis, but in comparison with 2019 the total annual quantity of air cargo is -18% lower. With regard to passenger transport, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office found that in 2022 the drop in the overall number of travelers compared to the pre-pandemic was -26%.
Federal Statistical Office of Switzerland, controlled by the Department of the Interior, finally underlined that the number of aircraft movements (take-offs and landings) rose by +86% compared to 2021, reaching 355,915 flights. Again, despite the good performance, traffic is -24% lower than in the pre-pandemic period.
