Munich airport: alleged spy arrested
German man accused of sending sensitive information to Russia
The German judiciary has announced that it has validated the arrest of a German citizen, identified by the name of Arthur E., who was arrested last Sunday at Munich airport, where he had arrived with an air connection from the United States. The charge against him is that of alleged collusion with an employee of the German secret services to transmit sensitive information to Russia.
According to the prosecutor who has the investigation file in hand, Arthur E. passed on to the Russian secret services information he had obtained from his partner, Carsten L., an employee of the German Federal Intelligence Service (Bnd, Bundesnachrichtendienst), who he had already been arrested in December 2022, on suspicion of being a spy in the pay of Moscow.
The arrest warrant for Arthur E. was triggered on Monday, after he was brought before a judge of the highest German criminal court, who had ordered him to be remanded in prison. Now the investigation will continue in close collaboration between the BND and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
