A group of officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is currently in Ukraine on a mission to assess the safety conditions of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after the repeated bombings recorded in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian nuclear energy company, Energoatom, has accused the Russians of using the plant as "a military base".

"The Russians use the facility as a military base. They know that no one from the Ukrainian side will bomb them, no one will attack them directly. It is a safe place for their military vehicles and staff", Energoatom chairman Petro Kotin said in an interview published by the British magazine "Economist". Inside the plant there would be armored vehicles and at least 500 Russian soldiers in the turbine hall and bunkers.

According to the allegations, the Russians wanted to feed the Crimean electricity grid with the Zaporizhzhia plant, but were unable to do so due to damage to the electricity stations due to the fighting. Meanwhile, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is negotiating with world leaders to create a safety zone around the plant.
