Europe relaunches joint purchase of arms

EDA: "Defense planning continues to be done mostly in isolation"

The European Defense Agency (EDA) has announced that the member countries of the EU will increase the military budget by 70 billion euros by 2025 (it was 214 in 2021). However, some critical points have been identified: the scarce lack of cooperation and purchase projects -on military transport aircraft, aircraft carriers, tankers and high-end air defense systems- aimed at creating homogeneous armed forces.

"Defense planning continues to be done mostly in isolation. EU Member States remain unconvinced by cooperation projects", explained the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Josep Borrell, on the sidelines of an annual meeting of defense ministers in Brussels.

The agency said only 18% of investments in defense programs involved cooperation between European countries. In short, cooperation and increased spending are the two pillars to ensure that Europe has a common defense and forces capable of responding to any crisis. Instead, many countries prefer to individually purchase weapons and equipment from suppliers outside the European borders.
