Lorenzo Fontana President of the Italian Chamber

"The greatness of Italy is diversity. Italy's interest is to sublimate diversity"

The Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic has a new president: it is Lorenzo Fontana (Lega party). The Montecitorio assembly entrusted him with the seat of the third most important position in the state with 222 votes in favor (majority of 197) out of a total of 392 present, all voting. There were two missing ballots, the white six, the zero eleven.

This is the inauguration speech of the new president: "The Chamber represents the different wishes of the citizens: ours is a multiform nation with different historical and territorial realities that have formed it and made it great: the greatness of Italy is diversity. Italy's interest is to sublimate diversity", he declared.

"I wanted to dedicate a first greeting -he added- to Pope Francis who represents a spiritual reference for the majority of Italian citizens. The Pope is carrying out a diplomatic action in favor of unparalleled peace". Then "as recalled by Sergio Mattarella, the role of autonomy is decisive: the pluralism of institutions and institutions strengthens democracy and society. The quality of democracy will depend on the answers we give".

"The legislature that is beginning -concluded Fontana- will have to reaffirm the central role of Parliament as a place for political decisions" and a "renewed attention will be needed on the quality of the laws that we will be called upon to elaborate: obscure or imperfect laws translate into costs for citizens, waste of energy and in the most serious cases denial of rights". We will need "a reversal of the trend between the regulatory power of the Government and the Parliament".

Lorenzo Fontana was born in Verona on 10 April 1980. Since 2016 he has been federal vice-secretary of the Lega Nord-Lega for Salvini Premier. In the past he held the position of Minister for the Family and Disabilities (2018-2019) and Minister for European Affairs (July-September 2019) in the Conte I Government. He was MEP (member of European Parliament) in 2009-2018 and vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies until the recent appointment.
