India launches first locally built aircraft carrier

This is the unit "Vikrant", added to the "Vikramaditya" which is slightly larger

The first aircraft carrier entirely designed and built in Indian shipyards, called "Vikrant", was launched in the port of Kochi, Kerala. The construction of the ship took 13 years. The total cost is 200 billion dollars to 2.5 billion dollars. The maritime vessel, 262 meters long and 60 meters high, has a 12,500 square meter wide launch deck that can carry up to 30 fighter planes and helicopters.

"The Vikrant aircraft carrier is not just a military tool, but a demonstration of Indian talent and capabilities", said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In addition to the premier, the minister of defense Rajnath Singh, the minister of maritime activities Sarbananda Sonowal and the governor of Kerala, Arif Mohamad Khan, participated in the inaugural ceremony of the warship.

The name "Vikrant" means "brave" and takes the name of the first aircraft carrier that India bought from England in 1961, which remained in service until 1997. Today the Indian navy owns two aircraft carriers: the "Vikrant" and the "Vikramaditya", slightly larger.
