Taiwan: China Airlines will replace old A-330 aircraft

Agreement on B-787 airplanes after Pelosi's visit to the island

China Airlines, Taiwan's flag carrier, has kicked off its fleet modernization program to replace A-330 aircraft. These will be replaced with 16 B-787 aircraft that will operate in place of the European manufacturer's aging airplanes. The order is worth 4.6 billion dollars at list prices.

The deal matured after a US Government delegation, following House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, visited Taipei in August. In addition to this, three other delegations of US congressional politicians traveled to the island. Diplomatic visits that have fueled regional tensions and confrontation with China.

A meager consolation for US manufacturer Boeing, after losing a bid for the 37 billion dollars maxi order won in early July by rival aircraft manufacturer Airbus to supply 292 new aircraft to four State-owned companies in China.
