Italy: 3600 airline connections cancelled

The figure recorded in the last month, but the situation is better than in Europe

In the last month in Italy 3600 air connections departing from airports in the Belpaese have been cancelled, with a peak of 377 cancelled flights recorded last July 17, the day of the national strike. This is according to data recently compiled by the National Civil Aviation Authority (Enac) for the period June 20-July 24. In addition, traffic to and from Italy in the first half of the year was four times the 2021 levels.

June and July put a strain on the aviation industry chain across Europe, but Italian airports held up better than others on the Old Continent. Disruptions in our country affected 1.8 percent of domestic flights and 3.6 percent of international flights. Black jersey in Europe for the airports of London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. In recent days, however, the epicenter of chaos has shifted to Australia, where Sydney and Melbourne airports have gone haywire.

The causes of this situation lie in multiple concomitant factors: the surge since March in passenger demand for air travel has been greater than expected, in fact, and has caught many companies and the airports themselves unprepared due to a generalized shortage of staff. Although Italy has not yet returned to pre-pandemic numbers (-23.5 percent over 2019) the recovery trend is important.
