Germany: how it will strengthen the armed forces

Overview of the 100 billion investment in aircraft, tanks, frigates and drones

Berlin's 100 billion euros special fund for the armed forces will allow for an efficient and more modern military. In recent days the two branches of the German Parliament, the Bundestag (Lower house) and the Bundesrat (Senate), approved the allocation. But what will this money be used for?

To the Air Force, 40.9 billion euros are earmarked for the purchase of 35 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II combat aircraft, 60 new Boeing CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters, as well as the development of the Israeli-made Heron drone, the European Future Combat Air System (Fcas) aircraft.

The Navy will get 19.3 billion euros for the purchase of four Braunschweig 130-class corvettes, 212-class submarines, multi-role boats, and the development of F-126-class frigates, missile systems, underwater detection, and submarine anti-aircraft defense.

Another 16.6 billion goes to the army for modernization of Puma tanks, development of the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) project, and new armored vehicles. In addition, 1.9 billion will be used for new equipment for soldiers, while 20.7 billion will be used to digitize all armed forces, and finally 500 million will be devoted to research and development.
