Germany approves defense fund

Green light to allocate 100 billion Euros for new armaments

The two Chambers of the German Parliament have approved the 100 billion euros special fund for the armed forces. After the green light in recent days from the Bundestag, the lower house, now comes the yes also from the Bundesrat, the German Senate representing the 16 state administrations.

The latter voted, by a two-thirds majority, in favor of an amendment on the constitution that unblocked the use of these funds for modernizing the vehicle fleet and purchasing weapon system supplies. The money will be used to purchase new aircraft, helicopters, ships, tanks and ammunition in the coming years.

Olaf Scholz's governing coalition held lengthy negotiations with the main opposition bloc to secure broad support before the vote. The chancellor had announced the establishment of the fund on Feb. 27, three days after Russia militarily invaded Ukraine. Berlin thus aligns itself with spending 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defense, as desired by the Atlantic Alliance.
