Ukrainian war: a long confrontation
Stoltenberd (Nato): "We must maintain sanctions and strengthen defense"
The end of the siege of the capital Kiev by the Russian Army, which is retreating to Belarus and the east of Ukraine, suggested a turning point in the armed conflict. However, it should not be forgotten that the clash began in 2014 in Donbass and Crimea, with the pro-Russian republics of Donetsk and Lugansk being proclaimed. This is the reason why the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) believes that the confrontation will still be long.
"We must be ready for a long confrontation with Russia, that is why we must maintain sanctions and strengthen our defense", said in recent hours the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, opening the Atlantic Council with the foreign ministers of the 30 allied countries. The war in Ukraine -he added- can last months or even years. Russia has not given up the idea to conquer Kiev and the whole Ukraine. We must be ready to face a long path" and "the option of providing heavy weapons is on the table". The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenksy, has asked it several times: Soviet tanks, American Javelins and Turkish drones are not enough anymore; now it is necessary to decide whether to raise the level of the clash with Moscow, delivering fighter planes to Kiev.
However, during the NATO meeting in Brussels, the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, reiterated the position of the Biden administration in relation to support for Ukraine: yes to economic aid and armaments ("they will have all the necessary tools to counter the bombers in the skies and tanks") but no to sending military fighters.
