Taliban ask Europe to help control Afghan airports

Request made in a meeting with the aim of improving diplomatic relations

Afghanistan's Taliban government has asked for help from the European Union to keep the country's airports running and safe. The request came during talks in Doha, Qatar, last week-end. The goal of the meeting was to improve relations with the international community and obtain the lifting of economic sanctions.

The meeting "does not imply recognition of the interim government, but is part of the Union's operational engagement" in the interest of both sides. "The Afghan delegation confirmed its commitment to ensure and facilitate the safe passage of foreign nationals and Afghans who wish to leave the country". "In this regard, both sides stressed the fundamental importance of keeping Afghan airports open" and the "delegation requested assistance in maintaining airport operations". This was stated in a note by the European External Action Service (EEAS), a European Union service responsible for Foreign Affairs.
