Today, Monday August 9, 2021, Russia has decided to reactivate air connections to the Egyptian locations of the Red Sea, a ban that has lasted for six years now. It all began when there was an attack on a Russian aircraft that caused the death of the 224 people on board (passengers and crew). It was October 31, 2015 and an A-321/231 aircraft (EI-ETJ brands) of the Russian company Metrojet crashed on the heights north of the Sinai. After some videos of unofficial claims, on November 18, 2015 ISIS assumed responsibility for the killing by means of a bomb.

In the past few hours EgyptAir flight MS724 has taken off from Moscow with 300 tourists, and the A-300/330 has landed regularly in Hurghada, a popular Red Sea destination. Relations between Moscow and Cairo are therefore gradually normalizing, taking into account the resumption of flights between the two capitals made official in 2018. According to the Russian ambassador to Egypt Georgy Borisenko, the decision was not adopted lightly by Russia, even if in recent years it has been ascertained a continuous increase in security measures in Egyptian airports and resorts. Borisenko himself hopes that Russian tourists can enjoy a safe and comfortable stay.

There are eight Russian air carriers authorized to operate connections to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikj from 43 cities in Russia, a list that however does not include a place as important as St. Petersburg, given that it is the destination of the aircraft shot down six years ago over the Sinai .
