Weapons depot exploded in Siberia
Thousands of people forced to leave home
On August 5, a military ammunition depot exploded for about 16 hours in Siberia near the city of Achinsk in the Krasnoyarsk region, injuring 12 people, one of whom is missing. More than 16,500 individuals have been forced to leave their homes. The flames were tamed after a grueling job involving 8 fire helicopters and 10 heavy transport vehicles. The air, rail and motorway transport network has been blocked, flights resumed today with the end of the explosions. The reasons for the fire in a country already devastated by fire for weeks are not still clear: millions of hectares of forest continue to go up in smoke and the situation has created a global climate alarm.
