Secretary of Defense Shanahan resigns
The head of the Pentagon leaves because of allegations of domestic violence
Patrick Shanahan leaves leadership of Pentagon. The interim defense secretary, who officially resigns for family reasons, leaves his role due to allegations of domestic violence that had been made by his previous wife that ended under FBI attention. Investigations started from checks carried out before the nomination: Shanahan was waiting for his possible confirmation as head of defense.
"After having been confirmed for deputy secretary less than two years ago, it is unfortunate that such a painful and deeply personal family situation from long ago is being dredged up and painted in an incomplete and therefore misleading way as a result of this nomination process. I never laid a hand on my then-wife and cooperated fully in a thorough law enforcement investigation that resulted in her being charged with assault against me—charges which I had dropped in the interest of my family. Our story is not dissimilar to those of the many families facing the difficult challenges that come when a loved one struggles with substance abuse and other emotional issues as is the case with my former-wife", Shanahan stated in a official declaration.
Donald Trump thanked him for his job and appointed Mark Esper as his successor to the Pentagon. Esper, who has served as army secretary since 2017, will be the third defense secretary in his administration, taking office after Shanahan and retired general James Mattis, who resigned because he disagreed with Trump's decision to withdraw US troops from Syria.
