Gorbachev: nuclear weapons "colossal danger" for the world

Invitation to the Nation to destroy atomic weapons

Mikhail Gorbachev, former president of the former Soviet Union said yesterday in an interview with the "BBC" that the tensions between Russia and the West still represent a danger to the world due to the threat from weapons nuclear. Gorbachev, who in 1987 signed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with former US President Ronald Reagan, effectively ending the Cold War, appealed to all countries: "As long as the weapons of mass destruction like atomic bombs, the criticality is colossal. All nations should declare that nuclear weapons should be destroyed. This is to save ourselves and our planet".

A statement that comes after the US exit from the INF in August (see AVIONEWS), the "warnings by missile" of North Korea (see AVIONEWS) and the threats of Iran to violate the Treaty of Vienna (see AVIONEWS).
