Russian anti-missile systems for Beijing
At the Valdai Club international affairs conference in Sochi on October 3, Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia is helping China to build an important missile defense system. The leader of Russia said: "This is a very serious decision that will greatly help China. Currently only Moscow and Washington are equipped with a similar apparatus".
This is a further confirmation of the closeness between the two countries: in September, Russian and Chinese news agencies reported that the two Powers intend to increase their businesses over the next five years for a value of about 200 billion dollars. Links between Beijing and Moscow that are becoming increasingly intense in the context of a trade war between China and Russia.
On September 2, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart exchanged congratulations for the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and stressed that mutual trust, good coordination and sharing of strategies were key factors in maintaining the peace, stability and development in the world. Putin pointed out that his country was the first to recognize the People's Republic of China and to immediately establish a close cooperative relationship.
The S-400 Triumph (code name Nato SA-21 Growler), previously identified as S-300-PMU 3, is a new generation anti-aircraft weapon system developed by Npo Almaz, a Russian defense company, produced by Mkb Fakel, a State-owned company based in Chimki and exported by Rosoboronexport. It is able to intercept ballistic missiles at a distance of 3500 km.
