Luca Parmitano becomes a colonel
The Sicilian astronaut will lead the "Beyond" mission
Luca Parmitano was appointed colonel of Italian Air Force. Sicilian astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA) is now in the Russian "City of Stars" training center at the outskirts of Moscow where he began preparing for his second long-term space mission on the International Space Station (ISS) after "Flying" mission in 2013. Then he will move to Kazakhstan and live in isolation in the Russian launch base from which Soyuz will take him into orbit. On 20 July 2019, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of first human landing on the Moon with Apollo 11, ESA "Beyond" mission will begin. Parmitano will form the crew of Expedition 60/61 with Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Skvorcov and NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan. Once in space he will have the honor of being in command of the orbiting station, the first Italian and third European ever to receive this important task.
